Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) – A Unique Health Assessment
The Spinal Centre Hawthorn Health Care practitioners are of a select group of Healthcare Professionals who have received extensive training in maximising healthy ageing and improving vitality, making them ideally suited to help you achieve your goals.
We use a scientifically validated test known as Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA), which assists us to design a program specifically for your needs. Nutritional supplements, exercise recommendations and dietary advice will be provided, giving your body the building blocks for maximum health and energy.
What is Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA)?
The Bio Impedance Analysis, also known as a Bio Impedance Test, VLA Test and Cellular Health Analysis is a scientifically validated clinical test that measures your major markers of ageing. It was originally developed to monitor patient’s health after surgery and has been used in several NASA space missions to monitor the health of astronauts.
This simple non-invasive test obtains your readings from a device, which is then entered into an expansive and comprehensive software program to accurately calculate a range of body parameters. It also acts as a powerful motivator to help you to improve various areas of your health.
What can a Bio Impedance Analysis tell you about me?
The Bio Impedance Analysis is an exceptional tool that gives you valuable information about your current health status. It accurately measures and gives readings on the following:
- your ideal weight for your height and frame size
- what percentage of you is fat, your total fat mass and your ideal fat mass
- what percentage of you is muscle, your total muscle mass and your ideal muscle mass
- the quality of your muscle
- your fat to muscle ratio

Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis – A Unique Health Assessment
VLA uses a scientifically validated test known as Bioelectrical Impedence Analysis (BIA).
The test is completed in a matter of minutes and is painless. This is done by attaching electrodes to your feet and hands that connect to the VLA machine. This assessment measures a bio-impedance current by sending a painless electrical charge between the electrodes. The process is completed within seconds and you don’t feel a thing!
Why Are Multiple Frequencies Used?
More than one frequency is used to improve the accuracy of the BIA device. The flow of current through the body is dependent on the frequency applied. At low frequencies, the current cannot bridge the cellular membrane and will pass predominantly through the extracellular space. For this reason the low frequency of 5 kHz is used to estimate the Extracellular Water (ECW).
VLA Quadscan Parameters
The VLA Quadscan is able to calculate a number of useful parameters that relate to body composition, cellular health and nutrition. It is important to remember that each patient is unique in terms of their body composition and fluid balance and the relative precision of population-based equations and reference ranges used may vary from patient to patient.
The key application of BIA is monitoring change from baseline in each individual person, and a device such as Quadscan with excellent reproducibility is ideal for this purpose.
