Ibuprofen Linked To Infertility In Males

Ibuprofen (Nurofen) falls into a class of drugs known as NSAIDs or Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs. They are often sold under names such as Advil, Motrin and Nurofen, and is used to treat minor aches and pains. According to the National Institutes of Health, people who take Ibuprofen (Nurofen) may be at a higher risk of heart attack or stroke risk than those who do not.

In a previous study it was found that Ibuprofen (Nurofen) had effects on new born male babies, increasing the risk of them being born with congenital malfunctions. Testicles not only produce sperm, they secrete testosterone, the primary male sex hormone. These hormones were also found to be effected by NSAID’s. Knowing this information was what sparked interest in studying the effects in older males.

A recent study was published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences as a continuation of the study researching the effects of Ibuprofen (Nurofen) on pregnant women. The research team recruited 31 male volunteers between the ages of 18 and 35. Of these, 14 were given a daily dosage of ibuprofen that many professional and amateur athletes take: 600 milligrams twice a day, explained Jégou. (This 1200-mg-per-day dose is the maximum limit as directed by the labels of generic Ibuprofen products.) The remaining 17 volunteers were given a placebo.

For the men taking Ibuprofen (Nurofen), within 14 days, their luteinizing hormones — which are secreted by the pituitary gland and stimulate the testicles to produce testosterone — became coordinated with the level of Ibuprofen (Nurofen) circulating in their blood.

At the same time, the ratio of testosterone to luteinizing hormones decreased, a sign of dysfunctional testicles. This hormonal imbalance produced compensated hypogonadism, a condition associated with impaired fertility, depression and increased risk for cardiovascular events, including heart failure and stroke.

Larger clinical trials are certainly needed however there is enough evidence to suggest that these medications are harmful to the male reproductive system and hormones including testosterone.

These effects are rarely warned to patients when these medications are prescribed which is truly outrageous since Ibuprofen (Nurofen) is a very commonly used medication. Heck, it is in the check out Isles of Supermarkets and Petrol Stations.

Research is suggesting that sperm counts among men in the west have more than halved in the past 40 years and are currently falling by an average of 1.4% a year. I certainly have no doubts that the abuse of NSAID drugs is a contributing factor to these declining rates of fertility, and if not dealt with immediately, will have devastating effects.

Aside from infertility, NSAID’s drugs cause major cardiovascular problems that can results in heart failure and stroke – these risks are not to be taken lightly, and are certainly not worth it for the ‘band-aid’ quick fix that is NSAID’s.

Remember, pain is your warning light – telling you that something is wrong. Be careful taking these medications to mask the pain.

It is far wiser to address the CAUSE of your pain through appropriate corrective care, structural alignment and spinal rehabilitation. Your liver, kidney, heart and apparently testicles according to this research, will thank you in the long run.
