Tired Of Being Tired? – HPA Axis Dysfunction

Are you tired of being tired? Feeling exhausted?

The body has a certain amount of resilience and ability to repair. Stressors such as infection, toxicity, poor diet, inflammation and emotional stress may lead to depletion of the body’s reserves.

Traditionally, low levels of cortisol and DHEA in response to chronic stress have been often blamed  on “adrenal fatigue” or “adrenal exhaustion”. However, during times of stress as part of the adaptive process, cortisol levels are mediated via the brain, specifically the hypothalamus, rather than the adrenal glands. Therefore, ‘hypothalamic pituitary adrenal (HPA) dysfunction is a more accurate descriptor of what occurs in response to chronic stress.

Modelling of the Sagittal Cervical Spine as a method to discriminate Hypolordosis

PUBLISHED: Spine (Phila Pa 1976). 2004 Nov 15;29(22):2485-92. Pub Med: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15543059

TITLE: Modelling of the sagittal cervical spine as a method to discriminate hypolordosis: results of elliptical and circular modelling in 72 asymptomatic subjects, 52 acute neck pain subjects, and 70 chronic neck pain subjects.

AUTHORS: Harrison DD1, Harrison DE, Janik TJ, Cailliet R, Ferrantelli JR, Haas JW, Holland B.

CONCLUSIONS: The mean cervical lordosis for all groups could be closely modelled with a circle. Pain groups had hypolordosis and larger radiuses of curvature compared with the normal group.

Media Release: Australian Chiropractic Association

Chiro Can Help You Get Ready For Life

As part of Spinal Health Week 2019 (20-26 May), the Australian Chiropractors Association (ACA) is encouraging Australians to take control of their health, regardless of age, by making chiropractic part of their spinal healthcare regime.

Australians aged 65 and over make up 15% of the population and the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare estimates that this will increase to 22% by 2065, putting additional strain on the government to provide care for older Australians.

Increase in Cerebral Blood Flow indicated by increased Cerebral Arterial area and pixel intensity on brain magnetic resonance angiogram following correction of Cervical Lordosis.

PUBLISHED: Brain Circ. 2019 Jan-Mar;5(1):19-26. doi: 10.4103/bc.bc_25_18. Epub 2019 Mar 27. Pub Med: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/31001596

AUTHORS: Katz EA1, Katz SB1, Fedorchuk CA2, Lightstone DF2, Banach CJ1, Podoll JD3.

RESULTS: Pixel intensity increased 23.0%-225.9%, and a Student’s t-test determined that the increase was significant (P < 0.001). Regression analysis of the change in pixel intensity versus the cervical lordosis showed that as the deviation from a normal cervical lordosis increases, percentage change in pixel intensity on MRA decreases.

CONCLUSION: These results indicate that correction of cervical lordosis may be associated with an immediate increase in cerebral blood flow.

Case History: Chronic Back Pain and Forward Head Posture

Correcting ‘Australian Posture’ – Chronic Back Pain

Case History: Chronic Lower Back Pain, Forward Head Carriage and ‘Australian Posture’

Mr. M. is a 44 year old male sales and office worker who attended the Practice.  Yes a real patient, real person.

He was suffering with chronic lower back pain (CLBP). He had been enduring spinal pain for 25 years and things were getting progressively worse.

In terms of postural distortion; Mr. M. had what we affectionally call an ‘Australian Posture’. Australian Posture is something we commonly see in Practice and is a driver of many lower back and neck conditions.

Australian Posture is the forward translation of the torso and head forward of the vertical green axis line, in the manner you see below. Not only does this create tremendous pressure on the lower back, but also the neck and shoulders.
